Michigan's assessment system has been updated for the 21st Century!
Since 1970, the state of Michigan has used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). These assessments have been delivered using traditional assessment methods of paper and pencil. These methods produced static assessments that did not meet the needs of all students and produced limited feedback to students and schools. Results of these assessments also took months to be released, making them less useful for school improvement planning.
The Michigan Department of Education’s Office of Standards and Assessment has developed a new assessment system, the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). This assessment program builds upon MEAP with a focus on next generation online assessment delivery, designed to effectively measure student growth.
M-STEP testing will begin in the spring of 2015. Unlike MEAP, M-STEP assessments will be administered in the spring only. English Language Arts and Mathematics will be assessed in grades 3–8, science in grades 4 and 7, and social studies in grades 5 and 8.
M-STEP is one component of the Michigan Merit Examination (MME), which is administered in 11th grade. MME will continue to include the ACT college entrance exam and WorkKeys.
